The decision of a Pre-Trial Chamber I of the International Criminal Court to confirm a war crime charge against a leader allegedly responsible for the destruction of historical and religious monuments in Timbuktu in 2012. The chamber said the targeted buildings were regarded and protected as a significant part of the cultural heritage of Timbuktu and of Mali and did not constitute military objectives.
