In 1971, Dr. Joseph C. Kennedy was appointed director of international development. Together he and Mr. C. Payne Lucas expanded Africare's reach from an organization providing disaster relief in Niger into a leading international development organization providing food security and agriculture, environmental management, civil society development and governance, health and HIV/AIDS, and emergency humanitarian aid in 26 African countries over the span of 30 years. In this short clip, Dr. Kennedy reflects on Africare's birth as a dream within the dream of Peace Corps, and how its work, and the people of Africa, have impacted his life. Dr. Kennedy retired as senior vice president of the organization in 1999.
