Geingob's Namibia Cabinet Reshuffle Leaves Some Happy, Others Sad

In a surprise turn of events, President Hage Geingob has reshuffled his Cabinet by naming Home Affairs Minister Frans Kapofi as new Defence Minister, replacing Peter Vilho, who resigned following corruption allegations in early April 2021. Geingob has also promoted former Walvis Bay mayor Derek Klazen to head the fisheries portfolio, while Albert Kawana replaces Frans Kapofi at home affairs. The appointment of Klazen as new fisheries minister has raised eyebrows, as he ran a fishing business with Sacky Kadhila-Amoomo and their firm has been named in the Fishrot corruption scandal. Meanwhile, Geingob has appointed 22-year-old Namibia National Students Organisation Secretary General Patience Masua as a new member of parliament, without voting rights. Masua replaces former defence minister Vilho in a move that has been described by the youth as "empowering".
