Can Political Will End Violence Against African Women?

As Africa marks the 19th anniversary of the Maputo Protocol and the global 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence, it is important for the region to reflect on its progress, writes Betty Kabari.

Many African governments have ignored the Maputo Protocol, despite its central role in preventing and addressing gender-based violence (GBV). In some countries, laws are weak and unclear, while in others, such as Gambia and Morocco, laws have been repealed and rulings on marital rape have been overturned.

Human trafficking, femicide, and intimate partner violence prove that political will remains a significant barrier. To combat GBV, African governments must demonstrate genuine political commitment, enforce zero-tolerance policies, and work with women's rights defenders to develop and enforce laws, said Kabari.

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that kicks off on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day.
