Uganda: 'Bobi Wine: The People's President' Misses Out on Oscar

The documentary "Bobi Wine: The People's President" chronicles the political journey of Ugandan pop star and opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, and is nominated for Best Documentary Feature Film at the 2024 Oscars.

The nomination marked the first time a Ugandan film has earned recognition from the Academy Awards.

Filmed over five years, the documentary captures the singer's transformation into a political figure and his struggle against President Yoweri Museveni's autocratic rule in Uganda. Co-directed by Ugandan filmmaker Moses Bwayo and Ugandan-born Christopher Sharp, the film provides an emotional roller coaster, showcasing both an inspirational leader and a nation in political turmoil.

With almost 4,000 hours of footage, the documentary shows the commitment to democracy amid state violence and torture, urging international awareness and hope for change.

The winner of the Documentary Feature Film at the Oscars was 20 Days in Mariupol.
