Five Years On - Over 800,000 Displaced by Mozambique Insurgency

Despite the military support that Mozambique is receiving from troops sent by neighboring countries and Rwanda, the insurgents are far from defeated as a new offensive in the northern province of Cabo Delgado undermines the government's claims of containing the insurgency.

Southern African and Rwandan regional forces which have been fighting in Mozambique's northern most province of Cabo Delgado since July 2021 are dispersing insurgents - but also driving them further west and south, displacing more civilians, reports Joseph Hanlon for Mozambique News Reports And Clippings.

The war started in 2017 when young people in Mocimboa da Praia attacked the local police station and army post, capturing weapons. Since then, more than 4,000 people have been killed and 800,000 forced from their homes.
