Malaria remains one of the most deadly diseases on the African continent, although it is a preventable disease and thousands of children can be saved if they are treated in time and if preventive approaches are put in place. A decentralized, community-based model of care is the preferred approach. In Burundi, where malaria is the first cause of death among children, our Doctors Without Borders (MSF) teams have supported authorities in malaria prevention and curative activities in several provinces since 1999.
