Opposition Leader Odinga Cancels Rally After Several Deaths

The anti-government protests called on by opposition leader Raila Odinga over the high cost of living and the pending implementation of the new Finance Bill by President William Ruto's administration descended into chaos when protesters lit bonfires and blocked roads near the Nairobi Expressway.

Police confirmed three deaths in Mlolongo, two in Kitengela, and one each in Emali and Sondu - all shot dead in day-long confrontations with police, but there are reports that at least 7 people were killed during the demonstrations.

The July 12 protest had been declared "unlawful" by authorities.
