New Academy to Nurture 'Orphan' Crops

A new research institution, based in Nairobi, will train scientists and technicians to breed neglected but nutritious plants and trees in order to help Africans manage better in harsh weather conditions.

Yams, bitterball, peppers, cassava, eddoh and rice are the most common crops. There are usually a few banana and plantain trees nearby as well.
