Boakai Orders Speedy Investigation Of Fire At Liberia Legislature

President Joseph Boakai has described the fire incident at the Liberian legislature as "complete banditry and gangsterism," while calling for a speedy investigation in order to "deal with the culprits".

A section of the Capitol Building, which houses the Liberian legislature, was engulfed by flames on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, following a day of violent altercation between police and protesters who were demanding an end to ongoing dispute at the House of Representatives and "respect for the constitution". Firefighters struggled to extinguish the blaze which left several parts of the building destroyed.

Tension has been brewing since a group of lawmakers, referring to themslves as the "majority bloc," attempted to oust embattled Speaker Fonati Koffa - of the opposition Coailition for Democratic Change of former president George Weah - and replace him with a member of the ruling party.

A recent ruling by the Supreme Court into the saga has failed to bring closure due to what some legal expects say is its lack of clarity.
