Zimbabwe Marks 45th Independence Day Under Shadow of Corruption

Zimbabwe marked its 45th Independence Day on April 18, 2025, but continued challenges such as rampant corruption, political repression, and economic instability continue to overshadow the celebration. The government continues to suppress dissent, arrest journalists and opposition figures on "bogus" charges.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his government are accused of corruption and mismanagement, which has left the country in economic crisis, while repression has weakened the political opposition. Mnangagwa took over as President following the 2017 military coup that deposed Zimbabwe's long-time leader, Robert Mugabe, who had been in power since the country's independence in 1980.

Calls for Mnangagwa to extend his tenure are "gaining traction" within Zanu PF, however, opposition has called for the president to step down for failing to revive the economy and for promoting corruption and nepotism.
